Je Suis Charlie

Dear Mom and Dad,

I'm sure you have heard  about the horrific shooting. Two Muslim extremists shot twelve members of Charlie Hebdo, a French satirical magazine that features cartoons and reports. They killed these people over cartoons of Muhammad. The cartoons were harsh and opinionated. But that is the point of this magazine. Charlie Hebdo mocks every religion. The two extremists took the cartoons unbelievably too far and killed twelve innocent people. It is never okay to kill people.We are fortunate to live in a country where we have freedom of speech and are protected to express our beliefs. This incident was an assault to freedom of expression and was unnecessary. Everyone should be protected to voice their opinions. I look forward to a time when more of the world follows the United States in permitting freedom of speech. Many people in France gathered holding up signs that said "Je Suis Charlie", meaning I am Charlie. This incident unified France and a majority of countries. While this incident is awful, you don't need to worry. I am fine in Mill Valley, California.
